Jasper Berehulke
Jasper Berehulke (he/him), a Two-Spirit Indigiqueer artist from the Syilx Nation, draws inspiration from a diverse background in 2D animation studios, a commitment to queer activism, and active engagement in the Indigenous community. Utilizing oil painting, digital illustration, and printmaking, I explore themes rooted in my heritage, community, and personal journey. In a world where Indigenous culture and the 2SLGBTQ+ experience often face misunderstanding, my art serves as a bridge, offering a reflective window to a wider audience. My goal is to deepen understanding, break down misconceptions, and nurture appreciation for the richness within these often misunderstood spheres. Through profound questions about the meaning of visibility with a queer, fat, or Indigenous body, my art delves into the intricacies of representation. I contemplate the visual expression of these experiences and anticipate audience responses. My artistic process amplifies personal feelings, cultural teachings, and current events, challenging both myself and others. I navigate the choice of material and medium, ensuring that my content is appropriately digested and interpreted. These ongoing reflections shape my artistic practice, fostering an exploration of identity, representation, and the dynamic interplay between pin my proposed residency, I aim to delve into the intricate relationship between transgender and nonbinary bodies and the inherent natural world.
In my proposed residency, I aim to delve into the intricate relationship between transgender and nonbinary bodies and the inherent natural world. Over the course of this residency, I plan to create a series of 20+ oil paintings ranging from small to large scale, capturing diverse bodies within natural landscapes to convey the inherent connection we share with nature, irrespective of the modifications our bodies may undergo. The central theme revolves around dismantling societal misconceptions surrounding transgender and nonbinary identities by showcasing their profound integration with nature. Day and night scenes will be explored, emphasizing the continuity of existence within the natural order. The compositions will feature bodies amidst various natural settings, from lush forests to serene lakeshores, with each painting aiming to articulate the idea that these bodies are an integral part of the natural world. The inclusion of fruit as symbolic elements will further emphasize the organic nature of gender diversity. The interplay of censorship and pleasure in the artworks aims to challenge societal norms, fostering a dialogue about the uninhibited celebration of diverse bodies. This residency provides an opportunity to visually articulate a narrative that transcends societal constructs, celebrating the beauty and authenticity of transgender and nonbinary individuals within the context of nature. Through this series, I hope to contribute to a broader conversation on acceptance, representation, and the inherent naturalness of all bodies.
